Will 4G LTE Pave the Way for Cable Broadband Improvements?
In 2012, we are starting to see some major improvements to cellphone data transfer. So much so, that the speeds that we are seeing on 4G LTE are actually faster than our home broadband connections in most cases. Reports are coming in from all over the united states ranging from 20mb/second and up to 50mb/second. Even during launch day for the latest “new” ipad I saw that speedtest.net was registering 20mb/second and above. So why are we always getting shafted when it comes to our cable broadband? Will this create a competitive platform where we can see speeds going up across the board?
These speeds are really impressive to see at work over a cell tower. Songs will download in less than a second, entire movies in under a minute and apps will just be installed before you know it. You will also notice that webpages are loading in under 2 seconds in some cases.
So why on earth are consumers paying 50 dollars or more a month for a service that is much slower and keeps you refined to your home. It makes me wonder weather this will get companies like Time Warner, Comcast, and Cablevision working to compete with Verizon and AT&T.
This could be great for consumers considering now we actually have a choice. The service is a little bit more complex with cell coverage. You have to pay for the service by the amount you use. For example, you will have to pay for 1GB, 2GB or 5GB of data per month. Eventually this will become an unlimited option for a set price. I am sure they are experiencing a lot of reports and managing the bandwidth limits. When cellphone companies commit to this technology and finally get a handle on the traffic I believe that only then we will see plans go unlimited for data.
Quite Simply, its competition and competition is great for the consumer. Currently, the speeds are very specific per the market, but it has been very high across the board I am sure in larger cities there will be a lot of traffic on the network but in areas less crowded it will run very well.
